Biography
Elijah Van Camp-Goh is a tenor trombonist and music educator based in Tallahassee, Florida. Over the past 11 years as a musician, he has achieved international recognition as a soloist and chamber musician, performed with orchestras across the United States, and cultivated a strong body of talented and driven students.
In 2024, Elijah was selected as one of the winners of the Jacqueline Avent Concerto Competition at the Sewanee Summer Music Festival and performed Lars-Erik Larsson’s “Concertino” with the Festival Orchestra. He was also named the winner of the 2022 Salem Trombone Competition and performed Joseph Edouard Barat’s “Andante et Allegro” with the Salem Band in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In 2020, he was selected as a Third Place Winner of the American Protégé’s International Concerto Competition, and performed at Carnegie Hall in 2022.
Elijah is currently pursuing his Master of Music degree at Florida State University, where he studies under Dr. Hana Beloglavec and serves as one of the trombone studio teaching assistants. He teaches a studio of four undergraduate students, coaches brass chamber music, conducts trombone choir, and performs with the University Symphony Orchestra and the Wind Orchestra. Elijah received his Bachelor of Music degree from Columbus State University’s Schwob School of Music, where he studied under Dr. Bradley Palmer, traveled internationally with the Schwob Trombone Ensemble, and performed with the Schwob Philharmonic and Wind Ensemble.
Elijah is an active chamber musician, currently being in a trombone quartet and brass quintet at FSU. At Columbus State, he was a part of the Iridescent Trombone Quartet, which was selected as a finalist for the 2025 International Trombone Association Quartet Competition and performed at the International Trombone Festival in London, Ontario.
He has performed with such orchestras as the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, Chautauqua Institution’s Music School Festival Orchestra, the Sewanee Symphony, the Panama City Symphony, and the Fresno Summer Orchestra Academy. He is also active in the audition circuit, having advanced in multiple auditions in 2024 and 2025.
As a teacher, Elijah aims to achieve student progress through effective collaboration, communication, self-reflection, and intrinsic motivation. Each student has different goals and passions related to the trombone, and they learn most effectively when their lessons and practice line up with their values and aspirations. Elijah encourages thoughtful discussions during lessons so the student can think critically and be mindful of their improvements, and tailors his feedback to each student’s sensibilities. He creates a safe space to facilitate healthy and steady progress, provides specific and detail-oriented feedback, and nurtures musicianship within the student that goes beyond just the trombone.
Elijah also enjoys arranging, having arranged music for trombone and piano, trombone quartet, and trombone choir. Outside of music, he enjoys playing pickleball, tennis, chess, and video games. He is always looking for ways to improve his playing, teaching, and overall musicianship to best serve his students, audiences, and the world.
